About Us

San Francisco Heritage is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) whose mission is to preserve and enhance San Francisco’s unique architectural and cultural identity. Since 1971, San Francisco Heritage has protected the city in the face of rapid change. This includes advocacy for historic resources, education programs, and tours and rental of the 1886 Haas-Lilienthal House. SF Heritage’s tax identification number is 23-7135037.

San Francisco Heritage’s mission has evolved over the past 50 years from concentrating on tangible cultural heritage to also including intangible cultural heritage. This has also expanded our reach to include more grassroots mobilization of local communities and partners, while embedding diversity, equity, access and inclusion into our priorities and actions.

Through two planned gifts of the Haas-Lilienthal House in 1973, and the Doolan-Larson Residence and Storefronts in 2018–both listed on the National Register of Historic Places–SF Heritage’s work has grown to include management of the Haas-Lilienthal Historic House Museum and more recently, the emerging development of the Doolan-Larson building on the corner of Haight & Ashbury into an innovative space for art, culture, advocacy, and dialogue, which includes an Artist-in-Residence program. Through our citywide advocacy and education programs, notably Heritage in the Neighborhoods and Heritage Hikes as well as our work with Cultural Heritage Districts and Legacy Businesses, SF Heritage is building a a culturally vibrant, diverse, and engaged local constituency to join in our preservation efforts.
