SF Stairway Month

SAN FRANCISCO’S FIRST OFFICIAL SF STAIRWAY MONTH KICKS OFF OCTOBER 1

SF Stairway Month highlights and celebrates San Francisco’s 900+ public stairways with free events including a guided walk, author talk, and the installation of a new tiled stairway in Glen Park.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (October 1, 2024) –Today, October was officially declared SF Stairway Month. SF Stairway Month will highlight and celebrate San Francisco’s 900+ public stairways, which can be seen on this comprehensive map documented by Urban Hiker SF.

The concept of SF Stairway Month was first raised by Burnside Mural+, a resident-led initiative (and SF Parks Alliance Community Partner) to create a visual representation of the colorful history of Glen Park through the creation of a mural and tiled stairway. The Burnside Mural+ group is starting installation of the tiled stairway this month. Today, the Board of Supervisors officially passed District 8 Supervisor Rafael Mandelman’s resolution declaring the month of October as the first San Francisco Stairway Month in the City and County of San Francisco.

“October is an opportunity to celebrate the effort that has been put into the creation and maintenance of these beautiful staircases by local artists, neighborhood groups, City staff, and local businesses. With the impending completion of the Burnside Steps, the many Crosstown Trail-themed events of “Crosstober,” and the best weather of the year coming up, it seemed a perfect time to celebrate the City’s stairways, and encourage citizens and visitors to get out and enjoy them.” said Supervisor Mandelman.

San Francisco is not only home to over 900 public stairways - dozens of them are tiled and otherwise decorated in the aim of beautification, community storytelling, and civic pride. SF Parks Alliance views public stairways as important public spaces that offer many of the same benefits as neighborhood parks, parklets, and trails. The organization has supported many community groups working on public stairway projects, including Burnside Mural+, Goettingen Neighbors Group, and Tompkins Stairway Garden. A full list of SF Parks Alliance community partner projects can be found here.

“San Francisco, October, and stairways equal perfection—incomparable views, great exercise, and fabulous artwork. Located in Glen Park, a block from beautiful Glen Canyon and along the SF Crosstown Trail, the Burnside Steps will assuredly be a source of joy for countless passersby” said Renee Berger, Project Leader from Burnside Mural+.

SF Stairway Month 2024 will include free events that showcase our city’s love and commitment to SF stairways including a guided walk across five of the City’s tiled staircases, a talk with the author behind Stairway Walks in San Francisco, and a learning session focused on the development of new tiled stairways. The tiling of the Burnside Steps is also scheduled to be completed at the end of the month, with a ribbon cutting tentatively planned for October 27. You can find a full schedule of SF Stairway Month events here.
