Public Policy Forum: San Francisco's Sanctuary City Policy
with Sheriff Vicki Hennessy
San Francisco Sheriff Vicki Hennessy joins the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce on March 14 to provide an overview of the city’s Sanctuary City ordinance and its impact on the Sheriff’s Department. Adopted by San Francisco in 1989, the Sanctuary City ordinance has guided local law enforcement for over 25 years. Like many ordinances, Sanctuary City has taken many forms throughout the years, and as a result, Sheriff's Department policies have adapted with it.
Sheriff Hennessy was appointed by Mayor Ed Lee in 2012 to serve as interim Sheriff for seven months. In 2015 she ran for Sheriff and won, earning 61% of the vote. Born and raised in San Francisco, Vicki joined the Sheriff’s Department in 1975, a member of the first recruit class that included women, communities of color and LGBT deputies. She was a member of the Sheriff’s Department’s executive management team for 25 years, serving in every division of the department.
