Join us for a guided merchant walk through San Francisco's historic Western Addition, a neighborhood where diverse communities have shaped a unique cultural and entrepreneurial landscape.
From its roots as the “Harlem of the West” to today’s vibrant mix of small businesses and community organizations, this event is a chance to explore the area's rich heritage while supporting local merchants.
Organized by UCSF and the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, this walk will provide a meaningful experience, offering insight into the resilience and creativity that continue to define the neighborhood.
WHERE WE'LL VISIT:
3:00 PM In The Black (Meet-Up)
- In The Black is a creative marketplace empowering Black-owned businesses by providing affordable retail space in the historic Fillmore district. Located at the corner of Fillmore and Geary, this hub reimagines a former check-cashing outlet as a vibrant center for Black community empowerment, wealth building, and prosperity. Through long-term leases, pop-up events, and an e-commerce platform, In The Black aims to support hundreds of Black entrepreneurs over the next decade.
3:25 PM She.Her
- She.Her San Francisco is a unique neighborhood boutique that showcases carefully selected items from small-batch, women-owned businesses, offering customers a place to express themselves and experience retail as an act of self-care. Specializing in lingerie, loungewear, and adult pleasure products, She.Her aims to help people look and feel incredible with thoughtfully curated selections. Founder Brett, a resident of the neighborhood, has deepened her community ties by opening the boutique, which allows her to connect with other small business owners and create a welcoming space for customers.
3:50 PM UCSF Black Wellness Center
- The UCSF Black Wellness Clinic is a dedicated collective of health providers offering care to Black individuals through a reproductive justice framework, emphasizing respect for each patient’s authentic experiences and knowledge of their own bodies. Cindy Fortune, the clinic’s Patient Advocate, serves as a key contact within the Black Women’s Health & Livelihood Initiative, ensuring that patients’ voices and concerns are actively represented. Through its range of clinical services and programs like EMBRACE, the Black Wellness Clinic provides racially conscious prenatal care and regularly hosts both in-person and virtual events, inviting the community to connect, relax, and engage with the space and its resources.
4:15 PM Booker T. Washington Community Service Center
- Since 1920, the Booker T. Washington Community Service Center (BTWCSC) has been a pillar of support for San Francisco’s African American community, originally aiding veterans and families in need after World War I. BTWCSC has since grown into a hub for educational, cultural, and social programs, providing family support, youth services, senior care, and job placement assistance for generations. Today, BTWCSC operates from a 70,000-square-foot space in the Western Addition, offering childcare, youth programs, studios, a gym, and 50 units of affordable housing, all aligned with its mission to empower individuals and families toward self-sufficiency and foster a vibrant community.

- Presidio Kebab Mediterranean Restaurant, located in San Francisco's Presidio Heights, offers a warm, inviting space where diners can savor authentic Mediterranean flavors. Known for their tender lamb kebabs, creamy hummus, and a variety of mezze plates, the restaurant prides itself on using the finest ingredients to create vibrant dishes that appeal to meat lovers and vegetarians alike. Presidio Kebab also provides convenient takeout, catering, and event services to bring Mediterranean cuisine to any occasion.
