San Francisco Historical Society Presents:
The Tides of Fortune that Changed the World
Saturday, September 19, 10am to 3pm
Learn about your downtown to understand how it evolved into a powerhouse of wealth for a few and for many. See the many historic buildings that housed financial institutions, historic companies, and more. Find the original coastline and how landfill claimed new real estate near the water’s new edge.
The self guided tour boundaries will be Montgomery at Market, up Post Street, over on Grant Avenue to Commercial Street at Montgomery, and back down Montgomery Street. Included in the tour will be One Montgomery Street, a historic bank building recently purchased by EMPIRE Entertainment. See what will happen next at this important location.
One of the Tour organizers, Gail Baugh, Fun Committee, San Francisco Victorian Alliance, stated:
“Our goal for this tour is to introduce part of San Francisco’s vital downtown area to its residents and discover its rich history created there and wonder what will come next.” Downtown is no longer a place of offices, and its workers during the day exit the downtown area at night. New ideas on how to utilize the offices for day and night are being discussed. Explore for yourself and ponder how this historically vibrant space can be utilized in new ways.
San Francisco is legendary in its ability to emerge from disasters with renewed vigor and a new vision of itself. Its continuous reinvention explains its ability to adapt and change with the times, while managing to keep intact some of its historically important buildings and locations.
“We expect this tour about downtown’s role in creating fortunes that changed the world to be a first in several annual tours that focus on different elements of downtown,” said Lana Costantini, Deputy Director, San Francisco Historical Society. As the tour’s sponsor, her organization was the recipient of the Wells Fargo historic artifacts now on display, including the famous replica stage coach.
