Recreation and Park Department Funding Reform
Over the past 15 years, San Francisco park funding has failed to keep pace with either the needs of the park system or the City budget. The Recreation and Park Department estimates that it has a $1 billion maintenance backlog, even as the city's population has increased and park use has grown. To address this, the Parks Alliance worked closely with Supervisor Mark Farrell to craft a Charter Amendment for the June 2016 ballot. The measure would slowly increase park funding to a more sustainable level over 15 years. It would improve accountability and transparency, while also protecting park funding going forward.
