Openhouse Remembering Our Hero, Jose Julio Sarria, The Widow Norton
Before Ellen...before Harvey...there was José Sarria... In the early 1960s, José Julio Sarria proclaimed himself Empress of San Francisco, The Widow Norton. He founded the international Imperial Court system and from the stage of the Black Cat bar in North Beach, he spoke out against the vice squad. In 1961 he became the first openly gay man in the country to run for public office. Openhouse is proud to bring together the family who loved and admired José on the first anniversary of his passing. Join moderator Donna Sachet and a panel of friends and experts for a lively exploration of José's historic role in the fight for LGBT rights. Cash bar starting 6:00 p.m. Buy your ticket on-line by midnight August 12 and save $5! All proceeds go to programs and services for LGBT seniors.
