San Francisco's Budget Challenges and Priorities
The City and County of San Francisco is facing budget challenges over the next two years. City Controller Ben Rosenfield and the Mayor's Budget Director Melissa Whitehouse will share their plans to tackle these challenges and keep the City on sound financial footing at our January 10, 2017 Public Policy Forum.
Ben Rosenfield was appointed to a 10-year term as City Controller in March 2008. As Chief Fiscal Officer and Auditor, he provides fiscal management oversight of an $8.6 billion budget and is responsible for budgetary planning and monitoring of the receipt, collection and disbursement of City funds. Before becoming Controller, he served as the Deputy City Administrator under then-City Administrator Ed Lee, and Budget Director for former mayors Willie L. Brown, Jr. and Gavin Newsom.
Melissa Whitehouse is the Mayor's Budget Director for the City and County of San Francisco. She leads the Mayor's Office of Public Policy and Finance, and her team is responsible for developing and submitting the City's balanced budget each June. Over the course of six years with the Budget Office, Melissa has worked on five adopted budgets and multiple long-term financial planning documents including the City’s Five Year Financial Plan and Ten Year Capital Plan.
